Subterranean vs. Drywood Termites: Which Infestation is More Catastrophic?

Everything You Need to Know About the Most Common Termites in Arizona

A termite infestation can quickly prove catastrophic, no matter what type of termites you have in your home. That’s because termites just keep eating all day, every day. A colony can quickly grow and cause extensive damage in your home if left unchecked. You need to get a regular inspection from a reputable pest control technician to identify and eradicate termites as early as possible.

A few types of termites can be found in Arizona homes. Among them, the subterranean termites and drywood termites are some of the most common. Knowing what type you have can help you develop a more effective termite control plan. Here’s what you need to know about these two common termite types:

Subterranean vs. Drywood Termites: Which Infestation is More Catastrophic?

Subterranean Termites

The major difference between subterranean termites and drywood termites is that subterranean termites live in the ground. They build tunnels in the ground between their nests and their food source. They can nest in the ground under your home or in your crawl space.

Generally, subterranean termites are more destructive for your home than drywood termites because they build much bigger colonies. They can quickly create a colony of up to 1 million termites. Each member of that colony will be a wood-eating machine, spelling disaster for your home.

Subterranean termites are usually no longer than a centimeter, and they have a white body with no eyes. The queen can be up to 10 centimeters long, and the king is usually just slightly larger. The queen can live for up to 15 years, and she can produce millions of termites during that time.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites do not need to live in the ground. They can live anywhere they find dry wood – thus, giving them their name. They also do not need much water. That means that they do not need to travel through mud tubs, so their presence is not as easy to spots as subterranean termites. Because they do not need much water, that also means that they can take up residence in more places in your home.

You are more likely to see drywood termites in wooden frames, trim, and window frames. They are also very common in attics. Typically, they eat the wood from the inside out, leaving behind only the outer layer of the wood. So, you might think the wood is whole until you touch it and realize it is a hollow shell.

Fortunately, drywood termites usually form much smaller colonies than subterranean termites, and they tend to congregate in isolated pieces of wood. Unfortunately, you can have multiple colonies of drywood termites in your home, infecting multiple spaces.

Get Effective Termite Control to Protect Your Home

You don’t need to identify the kind of termites that are in your home to take action. You need only find a reputable termite control company in Gilbert to perform an inspection and develop an appropriate treatment plan to protect your home. The termite control professionals will quickly be able to identify the type of termites that are in your home and can apply the treatments that will eradicate them quickly and keep them out of your home.

You just need to call the right Gilbert pest control company as soon as you notice any signs that you might have termites, such as peeling paint, a hollow sound in the wood, finding termite wings or waste, and so on. Even better, you should schedule a regular termite inspection so you can find termites before they leave behind signs of their presence. By the time you notice that termites might be there, they can have caused a significant amount of damage to your home. Getting a regular termite inspection can ensure that you find the termites as soon as possible so you can stop them in their tracks.
