Life-Threatening Issues Caused by a Mice Infestation

You might think of mice as cuddly and cute. After all, they appear in all kinds of kids’ movies and Disney lore as magical helpers and even friends. But when mice appear in your home, they start to seem a lot less cute. Not only can they chew through your walls, furniture, and even electrical wires, but they can also leave behind feces that can spread disease to your family.

A mice infestation can be a serious problem for your home and your family’s safety. You need to call a reputable Mesa pest control company as soon as you notice signs that mice might have settled into your home. Here are just a few of the life-threatening issues they can cause:

Life-Threatening Issues Caused by a Mice Infestation

Hantavirus

Hantavirus can cause serious symptoms that will make you very uncomfortable if you catch it. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, abdominal cramps, and chills. You can also experience fatigue and muscle aches. In rare cases, you can develop a pulmonary syndrome from the infection that can be life-threatening.

Hantavirus is spread by rodents – chief among them the white-footed deer mouse. You can catch hantavirus by inhaling infected rodent urine or by coming into contact with the urine, feces, or even saliva. You may think that these would be obvious items to avoid, but you may not realize what items in your home have come into contact with these rodent by-products, and the virus can remain.

Rat-Bite Fever

Two types of bacteria cause rat-bite fever: streptobacillus moniliformis and spirillum minus. The infection can become fatal if you don’t get treatment quickly enough. Typically, symptoms would set in three to 10 days after infection, and symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, swelling, muscle pain, and joint pain. Also, about 75 percent of people who are infected will get a rash, particularly if infection was caused by a bite or scratch.

If your mice infestation becomes bad enough, you can easily become bitten or scratched by mice that break free into the more habituated areas of your home – even while you are sleeping. However, you can also become infected with rat-bite fever if you have food or water that has been contaminated by the mice.

Salmonellosis

Salmonella isn’t just caused by coming into contact with eggs or raw chicken. You can also get it from mice. Usually, you would get it by eating food that has been contaminated by the mice.
Symptoms of salmonellosis include fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Typically, this would become life-threatening if you did not seek treatment and you became severely dehydrated.

Bubonic Plague

You might think that the bubonic plague is a relic of history, but sadly, you’d be wrong. The so-called “Black Death” isn’t stuck in the Middle Ages (when it killed one-third of Europe’s population). There have been news cases of deaths from the plague this decade.

The plague is highly contagious, and it is carried and spread by rodents. Typically, it is spread by a bite from an infected rodent. Symptoms can include headache, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. And, as history has shown us so painfully, if you don’t get appropriate and timely treatment, this infection can prove deadly.

You can’t take a mouse sighting in your home for granted. If you see one, know that there are likely more – many more. And the more mice or rats you have in your home, the higher your risk of falling prey to one of these potentially life-threatening illnesses. Even if you never see a mouse in your home, if you see the signs that mice might be present, you need to call a reputable pest control company in Phoenix to inspect your home as soon as possible.
