Scorpion Stings: Watch Out for these Common Symptoms

Scorpions are common in Arizona. Some of them just deliver nasty stings that are painful and frightening. Others deliver stings that can actually prove deadly – sometimes because of the potency of their venom, and sometimes because of an adverse or allergic reaction in the person being stung.

It’s important that you protect your home by hiring a reliable pest control company in Arizona to remove scorpions from your home and to keep them out. Meanwhile, since it’s not always obvious when you have been stung by a scorpion (as opposed to bitten by some other bug), you can educate yourself on the symptoms of a scorpion sting so that you can get treatment quickly.

Scorpions in the Desert & Common Sting Symptoms to Look Out for

Symptoms of a Scorpion Sting

The symptoms of a scorpion sting will not be the same for everyone. They will vary based on what type of scorpion stung you, where you were stung, your overall health, and even your age. Typically, the first thing you will notice is that the area where you were stung hurts – a lot. You may also see swelling in the area and feel warmth coming from it. In some cases, you may feel tingling or numbness around the sting.

More serious symptoms may develop after you are stung, including:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Increased heart rate
  • Difficulty breathing
  • High blood pressure
  • Muscle twitching
  • Blurry vision
  • Unconsciousness
  •
If you notice the signs of any of these more severe symptoms, you need to seek medical attention right away. You could become seriously ill or even die without the appropriate treatment.

    Treatment for a Scorpion Sting

Fortunately, most scorpion stings do not result in serious symptoms. They are usually just very unpleasant. Rather than reaching for a phone to call a doctor, you should use the phone to call a Chandler pest control company so that you don’t have to deal with the problem again.

For minor symptoms of a scorpion sting, you just need to manage the pain by using a cool compress to reduce the swelling and sooth the area. Since the sting has opened a hole in your skin, you should also wash the area to reduce the risk of an infection.

If severe symptoms do develop, you should call a doctor immediately. If you are having trouble breathing, you should call 911 and seek emergency medical treatment.

    Types of Scorpions

If you see the scorpion that stung you, that can be helpful if you need to seek medical treatment. The bark scorpion is most common in Arizona, and it is the most toxic scorpion found here. These scorpions are tan, yellow, or orange, and they have slim bodies and tails. If you think you’ve been stung by a bark scorpion, it’s important you let your doctor know that to get the appropriate treatment.

Other scorpions common to Arizona are not as toxic, including the giant hairy scorpion, the stripe-tailed scorpion, and the yellow ground scorpion. The giant hairy scorpion is – as expected – both large and hairy. They are the largest scorpions in the United States, coming in at over four inches long. The stripe-tailed scorpion is identified by its namesake tail, and it usually lives under rocks. The yellow ground scorpion is yellow, which often gets it confused for a bark scorpion. However, its tail segments are wider than that of the bark scorpion.

    Scorpion Prevention

As the saying goes, the best treatment is prevention. Why go through the pain of a scorpion sting and having to treat it if you can just avoid the sting in the first place? A good pest control company serving East Valley can help you do that. The company can eliminate any scorpions currently in your home and put measures in place to keep out any new scorpions.
