Pests do a lot more than make your home dirty and cause you embarrassment. They can also trigger allergies or asthma in you – even if you haven’t experienced these problems in the past. Common pests like cockroaches, scorpions, and bees can all cause allergic reactions that range from uncomfortable to actually life-threatening. Scorpion and bee stings can cause anaphylaxis, a process in which the airway tightens and you are unable to breathe.
Cockroach skins, saliva, and feces all have proteins in them that can trigger allergic symptoms, as well, which are often more serious in children.

It’s important that you take steps to keep pests out of your home not just to make your space more presentable to guests, but also to protect your family from potentially serious health complications. Here are a few things you can do to protect your family from allergic reactions caused by pests:

A Woman Scratching Her Arm

Clean Your Home Regularly

Pests often come into your home looking for food and water. You can make your home less attractive to pests by cleaning it regularly. Wipe down tables, kitchen counters, and stoves to keep food crumbs off surfaces, and sweep and mop the floor regularly to keep any snackable items away. Wipe up spills quickly, and use a cleaning solution to get rid of any sticky debris that might stay behind after a food or drink spill.

When there’s nothing on your floors or surfaces, there’s nothing to attract pests, and they are more likely to wander somewhere else in search of what they need.

Dispose of Trash

Don’t think that because you threw the food away in the trash can that your house is protected from pests. They will happily go into the trash to find that treasure. Instead, you should keep only a small trash can in your house, and you should empty it regularly – daily is ideal. Do not leave take out containers, drink bottles, or other trash lying around. Always put them in the trash as soon as you are finished with them.

Keep your home clean of trash to ensure that you are not attracting unwanted pests. Keep your outdoor trashcan away from your house, and put the can at the curb each week so waste management can pick it up.

Ventilate Basement and Crawl Space

Water is enough to attract pests into your home, and the basement or crawl space is the most likely place where pests are to find water. Make sure these spaces are properly ventilated and remain dry. Doing so will keep pests away, and it will also minimize your risk of developing damaging mold and mildew that can spread to the rest of your house.

Talk with a professional to have your basement or crawl space evaluated. You may need to make some changes to ensure that it is well-ventilated and that your house is protected.

Treat Pets

Pets like dogs and cats can easily attract pests like fleas and ticks into your home that can cause allergies for you. You will need to treat your pets to ensure they don’t track in these unwanted critters and cause potential health issues for your family. A good flea-and-tick treatment should be sufficient, but you should also follow up with a regular bath. Not only will you kill any pests that may be hanging on, but you’ll also remove pollen that can trigger allergies.

Keep your pet food sealed up tight also. Cockroaches and other pests will happily chow down on dog or cat food. Keep these tempting treats out of reach for pests.

Treat for Pests

The best thing you can do to protect against allergic reactions from pests is to treat your home for pests so
that they don’t have a chance to bother you or your family. Talk to a local pest control company to schedule an inspection of your property to ensure that no pests are currently present, then develop a pest prevention plan that will target any current pests, as well as those that are likely to target your property.

Even with taking all these steps, pests can still get into your house, and they can still cause serious allergic reactions. Make sure you have a plan in case you do have a reaction. Post important phone numbers to call in an emergency, and have allergy medication available when needed. Continue to be proactive in keeping pests away from your home, including developing a pest prevention plan with an experienced exterminator.
